No New Year For Some

bingedrinking

Someone’s going to die tonight
That’s a certainty.
But why this happens, doesn’t have to be.

In the revelry of drinking, some will consume too much
They’ll later plow their car or truck into a post,
over a bridge, or worse
Into another vehicle loaded with other humans.

Too much booze and too little tolerance
will push the limit for some
Out will come the gun
And rip through flesh and organs

There will be a combination of alcohol and drugs
Toxic levels will deprive oxygen to the brain
The beat of life will ebb and then end

It all started so jubilantly with friends and spirits
Laughter and song were filling the air
There were touches and smiles
Dances and games and innocent craziness

Most of us will wake tomorrow and fill little effect from the night’s chaos
Some will beg to be put out of their misery.
Coffee, cold showers or the hair of the dog
Will try to assuage the reminders of excesses

But some will not ring in the New Year
Their parents or spouses will view their corpses in morgues
A life full of promise will be disposed of
Feeding the earth or being being flung to winds as ashes

Someone’s going to die tonight
That’s a certainty.
But why this happens, doesn’t have to be.

Hope To See All Of You Next Year

  1. Too many will read this and then say “I’ll drink to that!” It’s not the drinking that is the problem so much as the driving, but “I’ll drive to that!” doesn’t sound near as funny.

  2. Can’t argue with that. Statistics seem to be on your side. Know you’ll have to sense to avoid the worst of the craziness. Wishing you all the best for 2014. Keep them pearls of wisdom coming.
